MONDAY, 12TH APRIL

Option 1: Pretoria City
 Duration: 5 hours
 Collection Time: 08h00

Cost: US$120 per person (minimum 2 pax required)

The City of Tshwane, formerly known as  Pretoria, lies only 58 kilometres (36 miles) north of Johannesburg and provides a complete contrast to the City of Gold. South Africa’s administrative capital was founded in 1855 and named after the Voortrekker leader, Andries Pretorius. Often referred to as the ‘Jacaranda City’, this nickname refers to the thousands of trees lining the streets, their purple blossoms magnificently heralding the approach of summer each October.

Our tour begins with a visit to the Voortrekker Monument, a striking memorial built to honour the early pioneers. We then continue to the imposing Union Buildings with their impressive view over the city, which houses the offices of the State President, Deputy President and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The tour ends off with a visit to the Pretoria National Botanical Garden.Your browser may not support display of this image. This 76-hectare urban oasis is a tranquil getaway a mere stone's throw away from the madding crowd. The Pretoria National Botanical Garden, founded in 1946, is home to the Head Office of SANBI. This garden successfully bridges the divide between scientific research and the recreational environment.

Entrance fees are included for the Voortrekker Monument and the Pretoria National Botanical Garden.

From here, the journey continues through an experience highlighting the history of our world and humankind as a species, brought to life via audiovisual techniques, evocative sound effects, theme-park technology and theatrical displays.

The fascinating story of the Cradle of Humankind brings to life the history of mankind in entertaining, educating and interactive ways at this exciting world-class facility, Maropeng (which means ‘returning to the place of origin’), which opened to the public in December 2005 and is situated about 10 kilometres away from the world-famous Sterkfontein Caves.

The focal point is the Tumulus building, designed to look like an ancient burial mound from the front. The architecture is symbolic of the journey through the evolution of life that is presented in the underground visitor attraction. When exiting after the tour, you look back on a very modern structure. Maropeng also offers restaurants and a marketplace, and there are original fossils and early stone tools on display at the visitor centre.

This day trip brings the apartheid era vividly to life. First stop is vibrant Soweto (SOuth WEstern TOwnship), the largest black residential area in South Africa, where we see a fascinating contrast to Rosebank and Sandton in the north. This sprawling ‘city within a city’ is home to approximately two-million people, many of whom work in various parts of the greater metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand.

The tour includes all the major points of interest, such as the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath taxi rank, Freedom Square, Hector Pieterson Memorial and Nelson Mandela's former home.

Next up is the Apartheid Museum. This extraordinary museum has already become the city's leading tourist attraction, an obligatory stop for visitors and residents alike. The Museum is next to the Gold Reef City Casino, five kilometres south of the city centre. It occupies approximately 6 000 square metres on a seven-hectare site which consists of natural recreated veld and indigenous bush habitat encompassing a lake and paths, alongside this stark but stunning double-volume building with its concrete and red brick walls, and grey concrete floor.

The Museum's director, Christopher Till, says: "It is appropriate that the first Apartheid Museum in South Africa should open in Johannesburg, where at the turn of the century there was a convergence of people for a range of different reasons. Black people were displaced from the land through colonial wars and the imposition of poll taxes, and white farmers were displaced through the Anglo-Boer War.”

A multi-disciplinary team of curators, filmmakers, historians, museologists and designers was assembled to develop the exhibition narrative which sets out by means of large blown-up photographs, artefacts, newspaper clippings, and some extraordinary film footage, to graphically animate the apartheid story, making for a powerful experience.

Option 2: Gold Reef City Tour

Cost: US$140 per person (Minimum 2 pax required)

Experience the excitement of the gold rush in Johannesburg, known as Egoli, the City of Gold. The city is synonymous with South Africa’s gold-mining industry – it was, after all, founded way back in 1886 as a miner’s village on the Witwatersrand goldfields. Today, the Gold Reef City theme park and museum - built around the original No.14 shaft of Crown Mines – recreates the city as it was during the early days of the gold rush.

Your guide will conduct your tour through the complex at your leisure, where you’ll delight in the myths and magic of gold, get a glimpse into the lifestyle of those early pioneers, experience the excitement of travelling 220 metres below the surface to see first-hand how precious gold is extracted from the earth and watch the liquid yellow metal being poured into ingots. Enjoy the remarkable recreation of Victorian Johannesburg and the legendary characters that featured in the world’s greatest gold discovery. A stunning experience, never to be forgotten!
